The World’s Most Expensive Watches

Like a handbag or shoes, you have to have the right watch for the job and when you have an endless supply of money, which watch do you buy? Well let your worries disappear all you oil barons and celebrities, below is a list of 5 of the world’s most expensive watches. This list doesn’t include pocket watches, or collections of watches. These watches also have to have been sold or auctioned and are astronomically priced. So without further ado, let’s begin.

Patek Philippe 5004T

We’ll start with the cheapest, but still way beyond our grasp, it’s the Patek Phillipe’s 500T. The T in the name stands for Titanium, this Patek Phillipe watch is quite literally a one-of-a-kind piece. The titanium option is the only one in the 5004 series, a series which has now been discontinued. This watch is very nice though; sleek, stylish and generally quite the showstopper. This watch has a 12 hour split second Chronograph, a perpetual calendar and a moon phase indicator all embedded in a beautifully checkered face with pointed watch arms. This watch designed for the Only Watch 2013 auction, and was snapped up.
Amount– $3,794,732

Patek Philippe Platinum World Time

Climbing the ladder at fourth place is once again Patek Phillipe’s Platinum World Time. This one-of-a-kind timepiece was created in 1939 as part of the Patek Phillipe Time collection. At the time of auction in 2002, it was actually the world’s most expensive wristwatch fetching $4,000,000 but has since been surpassed by a plethora of others. It’s quite the impressive piece of kit, the watch winds itself and is capable of finding the time regardless of its location in the world and has a very stylish blue, green and sandy map watch face. Amount– $4,000,000

Hublot Big Bang

At third place – and half way through the list, Hublot’s Big Bang. This watch has such a high price for one major glittering reason (or 1280 of them); diamonds. This watch has a total of 1280 3-carat diamonds. Every diamond was cut by an experienced well-known New York jeweler to ensure every cut was the same. It took a whole year to source the stones worldwide but with a price tag of $5,000,000 why not? No expense is spared! The happy owner of this watch is the one and only Jay-Z after receiving it as a 43rd birthday present from Beyoncé.

Patek Philippe Ref. 1518

In second place is Patek Phillipe for the 3rd time, with their Ref 1518. Patek are one of the heavy-hitters when it comes to high-end time pieces, as you can see they even feature 3 times on this list! The strange thing about this particular watch is quite simply that it has a stainless steel casing rather than gold and that it’s the first of only 4 ever made which of course sends the price tag soring.

Amount– $11.136.642

Chopard 201-carat watch

Finally, we’re here at the most expensive watch, with Chopard’s 201-Carat masterpiece. This watch looks, in my opinion way too over the top. This shining glory contains 874 rare diamonds and was sold for $25,000,000 in 2000. This piece is so overly encrusted that it pushes the boundaries of garishness and unless you really focus you’d never see every gem. The watch includes 3 heart shaped diamonds in Fancy Pink and Blue and a D color (all ranging from 11 to 15 carats), 26 pear-shaped diamonds with a total of 17.07 carats and 443 FC diamonds at a mere 4.95 carats. The look is supposedly designed to represent a flower.
Amount– $26,000,000
So there we have it, 5 watches out of reach of us common folk and destined for the dream wardrobe. We can however, like a Ferrari or Lamborghini, awe at their beauty and appreciate the craftsmanship and expense of these creations. There will always be a drive for the extravagant when it comes to those with wealth so this of course means these watches will soon be banished way below the top 10 let alone the top 5 but I for one am looking forward to seeing which timepieces appear in the list.
